The 13th Istanbul Biennial: "Mom, Am I A Barbarian?" Antrepo No. 3

Installation of Fernande Gomes

Fernanda Gomes born in 1960 in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. Also lives and works in here.

Gomes links architecture and space with the mental and emotional, thus exploring the relationship between architectonic and natural space. She creates moments of pure 'space-time' out of what she calls 'things'. Starting from a moment in time, a particular instance, Gomes creates alternate spaces within a space, making new situations emerge through simple but powerful processes.

Gomes visited Istanbul for 20 days and made her piece from the influences, materials, and conditions the city offered, without a particular plan and no defined project or predetermined materials. She considered place and space, time and moment, inside and outside, mental and public spaces, and open and unpredictable situations within the context of Istanbul and created a time specific pieces of art.

It is the spare room which includes materials of Gomes

Purpose of the work is creating complete awareness and maximizing the possibilities for freedom, emotional experience, and perception.

Cinthia Marcelle & Tiago Mata Machado - The Century

Marcelle and Machado born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Live and work in here.

Marcelle captures the seemingly absurd theatrics of the everyday. Set in various deserted urban landscapes, Marcelle's idiosyncratic pieces merge the political and poetic in unexpected ways. She visualizes review of power games playfully. She wants to generate an insight about bringing the marginalized to the centre. She shows improbable scenarios on a micro level that allude to the larger scheme of things which impact our lives on different scales.

The Century, film, is a collaborative work of Cinthia Marcelle and Tiago Mata Machado. The film begins with a black screen.Sounds of running steps cut off with a thud. Then the objects are throws from right side of the frame. Also there are crashing sounds of helmets, oil barrels, sticks, metal rods and wooden crates. The empty street replaces with dust and smoke. Then the same items throws the left side of the frame. It is like an imperfect mirror. The evidence of the unknown conflict is the leftovers.

It expresses political division of left and right. This work does not offer a solution to which appears to be an eternal loop of struggle. Just suggests to reconsidering about new strategies.
